5 Skills You Need If You Don't Want To Be Replaced By Robots

Oct 04, 2020

by: Ellaine de Luna, Marketing & Communications Team Lead

The idea of robots replacing certain people in some portions of the workforce is not a new idea. There is, however, an increasing argument insisting that robots will eventually remove a huge number of people in different industries. A study in Oxford University shows that all developed nations can expect to see job loss rates of up to 47% within the next 25 years. To add to that, a Pew Research Center case found that “robotics and artificial intelligence will permeate wide segments of daily life by 2025, with huge implications for a range of industries such as healthcare, transport and logistics, customer service, and home maintenance.” That is a mere 5 years from now.

Especially now, a lot has changed in the terms of how we work or study. The past seven months have made the Philippines and a lot of other places across the globe heavily reliant on technology in order for us to go on with our everyday lives. The limits and restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have proven that with modern technology, nothing is impossible to do.

But there is no need to panic, all you have to do is to understand which skills won’t be threatened by the future of work. Truth is, technological advances haven’t decreased the amount of jobs available—they’ve actually brought about a net increase in jobs. A lot of new employment opportunities which weren’t existing in the days of the past are currently on demand these days, from software developers, medical coders to graphic designers - all these are available for those who are skilled enough to take them. Most of these we have in Nezda Technologies.

In this article, we have summed up our own top 5 skills you need to posses because they can never be replaced by artificial intelligence:

EMPATHY

Robots may be able to provide customer service over the phone or through other traditional and digital channels but they will never be able to empathize. They can never have the innate ability to connect and understand humans on an emotional level. Empathy and other interpersonal skills are very important and required for positions that require an understanding of human emotions. Can you imagine a robotic career coach trying to understand your career goals?

CREATIVITY

Creativity means having the ability to dream up and make new discoveries about ideas that currently do not exist. While robots may be able to recognize and analyze existing data, and can produce art, music, or writing - they will never be able to fully grasp the “full story”. Innate human creativity is required in most, if not all jobs possibly available because humans can appreciate the unique ideas and abilities exhibited and required by various forms of “craft.”

PLANNING

The future cannot be determined or exactly predicted. Sure it can be “estimated” but that is not about it. There are jobs out there that require humans to navigate parts unknown. There are jobs out there that require people to manage shifts in priorities and gaps in information which robots cannot do. There are jobs out there that require planning and being ready with a contingency plan - just in case things don’t go the way we expect them to and these are things robots won’t be able to do.

JUDGMENT

Imagine a robot replacing a medical tele interviewer or a wealth and retirement coach - that is a little bit scary, isn’t it? Logical reasoning based on judgment only goes so far and in simple terms, robots will never know the concept of “right” and “wrong”. Conflict resolution and negotiation are relevant skills that can never be replaced. Because you see, a lot of things involve emotions and irrationality which robots cannot determine.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The ability to create, manage and fix the technology itself will put information technology or technological management on the top list of skills that can never be replaced by robots. You see, while artificial intelligence or robots can possibly change the way we work in the future, those with IT skills will be more in demand in the job market because they will be the ones to manage, maintain and fix these technologies.

While these may seem intimidating to think about, and if you currently work in a field predicted to be replaced by robots in the future, remember that the most valuable skill you need to possess is the ability to adapt in societal shift.

If you are looking for a career path that can secure you in the years to come, do give us a call or shoot us a message so we can help you plan it out.

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”
